Women make up just 13.6% of computer science majors, black people make up just 10%–so imagine the overlap for black women. These two statistics conceptualize my main motive for creating Girl Code–a game that teaches basic coding concepts to black girls. I have designed this project to resonate with this group that is often overlooked in the fields of STEM due to preconceived notions rooted in racist pasts. It consists of a series of levels that teach increasingly more challenging subjects, ranging from if statements to boolean operators. This game incorporates a character, Nicole, which the user can hopefully relate to that encourages them to complete the series of coding challenges. My ultimate goal was to make this experience educational, fun, and rewarding in an effort to change the face of STEM today.
